Product Description

Right. This one’s for the people who love a proper fruitcake – the kind with plump raisins, sultanas, currants, mixed peel, and a hint of spice. Not the dry, crumbly kind. A moist, rich, flavoursome fruitcake that tastes like Christmas and birthdays and everything in between. And it’s square – because squares are easier to slice into neat portions, and they look lovely on a plate.

Someone asked me a while back: “can you make a traditional mixed fruit cake but not round? Square would be easier for my mum’s coffee morning. We’re in Grove Park.”

I said yeah, course. I made a square fruitcake, packed it with soaked dried fruit, a touch of brandy (or orange juice for alcohol‑free), and a warm blend of cinnamon and nutmeg. Then I brushed it with apricot jam and topped it with a few almonds. She said it was just like her gran’s. That’s a win.

So here it is: Square Mixed Fruit Cake – available for delivery and collection across Bromley, Downham, Grove Park, Sydenham, Catford & Bellingham.

It’s a square cake, about 7 inches. Feeds 6–10 people. Perfect for a Christmas celebrationbirthdaycoffee morningafternoon teaEaster, or any time you want a proper, old‑fashioned fruitcake.

What’s in it?

  • Sponge – a dense, moist fruitcake base. Packed with mixed dried fruit: raisins, sultanas, currants, chopped dates, and mixed citrus peel. I soak the fruit in tea, brandy, or orange juice for at least 24 hours before baking – keeps it juicy.

  • Spice – warm cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of allspice. Not too much – just enough to make you think of winter.

  • Filling – no filling needed, but I can add a layer of marzipan or a thin spread of apricot jam if you like.

  • Frosting – a light dusting of icing sugar, or a simple glaze, or a layer of marzipan and royal icing – you choose. For a traditional look, I recommend a thin almond paste and a smooth white icing on top.

  • The square shape – sharp edges, easy to slice into even squares. Perfect for sharing.

  • The look – you can keep it rustic with just a dusting of sugar, or go full celebration with icing and a few glacé cherries and almonds on top.

It’s the cake that takes time to make, and you can taste the patience. Rich, fruity, and full of love.

Who buys this?

  • Christmas cake – the classic festive centrepiece.

  • Birthday cake – for someone who loves traditional flavours.

  • Coffee morning cake – slices beautifully, serves a crowd.

  • Afternoon tea – a square fruitcake is very British.

  • Easter celebration – fruitcake isn’t just for Christmas.

  • Just because – you want a proper, old‑school cake.

  • Honestly? Anyone who thinks fruitcake gets a bad rap – and wants to prove it’s delicious.

Can I get it alcohol‑free?

Yes. I soak the fruit in orange juice or cold tea instead of brandy. Still moist and flavourful.

Can I add marzipan and icing?

Yes. Traditional Christmas style – a layer of marzipan, then a smooth layer of royal icing or fondant. It’s extra special.

Can I add a message or name?

Course. “Happy Christmas”, “Happy Birthday”, “Mum” – I’ll pipe it in icing or write on a little sugar plaque.

How much notice?

At least a week for fruitcake – the fruit needs time to soak and the cake needs to mature. Order online or message me – I’ll be honest.

Collection or delivery?

Collect from our Bromley shop or get local delivery to Downham, Grove Park, Sydenham, Catford, Bellingham – all within easy reach.

One thing to mention…

This is a proper fruitcake – it’s dense and rich. A small slice goes a long way. It keeps for weeks if stored in an airtight tin (and even improves with age). If you want it without nuts, just ask – I can leave out the almonds.

Right. That’s the Square Mixed Fruit Cake done.
For the people who believe that fruitcake is unfairly maligned. And that a square slice of moist, fruity, spiced cake is one of life’s great pleasures – delivered right to your door in Bromley, Downham, Grove Park, Sydenham, Catford, or Bellingham.
